The information within the Extj.org archives has been collected to offer the public a resource concerning groups called "cults," controversial organizations and movements. We are not associated in any way with The Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, New York, or any of its corporate identities.

However, the mention and/or inclusion of a group or leader within this archive does not define that group as a "cult" and/or an individual mentioned as either destructive and/or harmful. Instead, such inclusion simply reflects that archived articles and/or research is available about a group or person that has generated some interest and/or controversy.

All the information archived must be evaluated critically, through a process of independent and individual judgment.

Copyright Information and Notice

In many cases the original copyright has expired without renewal. In those cases, the works are now considered to be in the "public domain" and as such are not encumbered by copyright restrictions.

For publications still protected by copyright, this Web site publishes under the provisions of international copyright law, which allows for excerpts to be published, for the purpose of review and/or study, without first obtaining the express written consent of the copyright holder. According to the FAQ at the U.S. Copyright office:

How much of someone else's work can I use without getting permission?
Under the fair use doctrine of the U.S. copyright statute, it is permissible to use limited portions of a work including quotes, for purposes such as commentary, criticism, news reporting, and scholarly reports. There are no legal rules permitting the use of specific number of words counts, a certain number of musical notes, or percentages of a work. Whether a particular use qualifies as fair use depends on all the circumstances.

What is "fair dealing?"
It is the use or reproduction of a work for private study, research, criticism, review or news reporting.

UNITED STATES CODE ANNOTATED
TITLE 17. COPYRIGHTS
CHAPTER 1--SUBJECT MATTER AND SCOPE OF COPYRIGHT
Current through P.L. 105-153, approved 12-17-97

s 102. Subject matter of copyright: In general

(a) Copyright protection subsists, in accordance with this title, in original works of authorship fixed in any tangible medium of expression, now known or later developed, from which they can be perceived, reproduced, or otherwise communicated, either directly or with the aid of a machine or device. Works of authorship include the following categories:

(1) literary works;
(2) musical works, including any accompanying words;
(3) dramatic works, including any accompanying music;
(4) pantomimes and choreographic works;
(5) pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works;
(6) motion pictures and other audiovisual works;
(7) sound recordings; and
(8) architectural works.

(b) In no case does copyright protection for an original work of authorship extend to any idea, procedure, process, system, method of operation, concept, principle, or discovery, regardless of the form in which it is described, explained, illustrated, or embodied in such work.

The Body of Elder's letters that appear on extj.org or extj.com do not fall under category (A). These letters cannot be classified as literary works; musical works; dramatic works; pantomimes or choreographic works; pictorial, graphic, or sculptural works; motion pictures or audiovisual works; sound recordings or architectural works. They do however fall under category (B): ideas, procedures, processes, systems, methods of operation, concepts, principles, and discoveries.Fair Use does not apply with the posting of these letters. If copyright infringement cannot be proven, that reason alone nullifies any reason for Fair Use. If any of these letters fall under category (A), I will be more than happy to remove such copyright infringing letters - but only if proof is provided.
